Well, my seven are about to return from their gallery show at Three River's
Auction where they were on call to model some of the best of my Antique and
Vintage Collection. The two day sale came off with rave revues. Of course
the green room reverberated with the usual arguements about who was going
to wear the 22" waist garments! Even el Cid vied for the priveledge of
wearing the "Captain Kangaroo" suit. Such prima donnas all.
Once home, they will have a well deserved vacation, and then back to the
grind...18th and 19th repros. Life is hard.

She will arrive in Williamsburg Thursday night. She is staying at te
Williamburg Inn. She will enjoy a carriage ride through the historic area
on friday, and address people at the College of William and Mary. Later she
will be at nthe two Jamestown Parks. I will be escorting her as part of an
honor guard at Jamestowne Settlement.

Oh well, you can't win them all. Queen Elizabeth II is coming to Richmond,
VA Thursday for the 400th Anniversary of Jamestown. Last Friday, it was
announced that she would be at the Capital on Thursday, May 3. And that the
Queen would be receiving 108 people in representation of the original 108
Jamestown Colonists. The Commonwealth of Virginia had a lottery today to be
one of the 108 people. Darn, I didn't win. But my daughter, son, and I are
going to the Capital to see the Queen give a speech. Hopefully we can get
close enough to take photos. The Queen will be going to Jamestown next
week. LOL! I wonder if the Queen is going to the NASCAR race in Richmond
this weekend.

Wool! Wool is always right. When lined with light/handkerchief linen it
is especially wonderful--warm when it's cold out, and breathable and
surprisingly wearable even in the heat. If you can find a nice smooth
worsted wool gabardine (just a regular gabardine, not the one called
tricotine, or any of the new ones with lycra) it washes with hardly any
shrinkage and looks great for years.
I'll second the comment about modern silks: the current fashion is for
soft and flowing, or, as in the case of dupionis and chantungs, firm and
slubby. Either way they are not ideal for this period.

one's wearing assorted bits of child sized tudor clothing I'm doing for a
museum
one's wearing a tuodor fencing doublet I'm doing for fun
one's wearing an original 30s silk velvet bolero jacket I'm restoring
and another two are wearing the beginnings of dresses being made for
parties
- one for a friend will eventuallly be an 18th c saque, and one for me will
be some sort of victorian or edwardian dress for a days of the raj party
the rest are shamelessly naked :o)

I have a Master's Degree in Art History and I'm currently teaching at a
local community college. My path to professorship was basically that there
are very few other choices out there for a person with an Art History
degree. Yes, there's museum work, but that really wasn't my cup of tea when
I was in school.
If your husband is at all considering getting a PhD, I would encourage him
to keep that as his goal. Most institutions of higher education will want a
PhD to hire someone for a tenure-track position. Even my community college
put "PhD preferred" on the position notice for the full-time art historian
job last year. At most four-year colleges and universities, it's "PhD
required" to even be considered for a faculty job.
That being said, if he can get in at a local community college, this is a
great way for him to get his foot in the door in terms of teaching. It will
look great on his resume for the future and will also give him a sense of
whether teaching is what he _really_ wants to do. Perhaps he can teach for
a while at a community college and then start his PhD in a few years?
What he can do is look around at the websites of your local colleges and
universities. Most of them have job listings posted online and he can look
at the position descriptions and requirements and see what each school is
looking for in terms of qualifications. He can also call the HR departments
as you suggested, if he has specific questions about a particular school.
I don't think it's important that he get his final degree from the school at
which he eventually wishes to teach. In fact, it's the other way around -
most schools want to see a diverse background - they want to hire people who
have been other places and had other experiences that the new hire can bring
into their community.

I know we have a handful of professors on this list, and hopefully at
least
one of you can give me some input! Please feel free to take any responses
off-list.
The husband, Thomas, has decided that his ideal career is that of an
electrical engineering or math professor. Right now, he's only got his
masters (or will have at the end of the summer), and since he's been
working
full-time as an ee while also attending classes at WUSTL for his masters,
he's a bit reluctant to go straight into getting his PhD. (I, too, am a
bit
reluctant to spend who knows how many more years of only seeing him on
weekends.) However, most community colleges and a few 4-year institutions
are willing to hire instructors with only a masters, especially when the
potential instructor also has some non-academic work experience in the
field
he wants to teach. The husband likes the idea of teaching at a community
college for a while rather than waiting to get his PhD, though he would
prefer to wind up as a tenured PhD at a 4-year institution. As a first
step, he hopes to be a part-time instructor at a local college, while
still
working full-time at the job he has now.
Those few acquaintances I have who have become professors got into it by
basically becoming professional students, and that's not a path Thomas is
likely to take. (If nothing else, I'm no longer capable of putting him
through school! And oy, we're almost done paying off the last batch of
student loans...) So, we're trying to figure out a plan of attack for
Operation Become A Professor In Montana Or Wyoming.
So much for the background. My questions are very general: what path did
you take to become a professor? What other paths have you seen
successfully
navigated? What would you advise Thomas to do, and what would you advise
him NOT to do? How important is it to get your PhD from the
college/university where you hope to teach? Who should he talk to--for
example, would it be a waste of time for him to call up some HR
departments
and ask them these sorts of questions, while he's still in the planning
stage? Is it a good idea for him to get a bit of teaching experience in
wherever possible, as with the part-time instructor plan? And so on, and
so
forth, and the like, etcetera.

I was there recently and had the pleasure of meeting with Linda Baumgarten,
the curator of clothing at textiles at Williamsburg. She actually
volunteered this information (although I was planning to ask anyway) and I
think people on this list might be interested:
There WILL be a reprint of Costume Close-Up and I think she indicated that
it will happen within about a year.
Sorry to those folks who are trying to get upwards of $200 for it on EBAY
but those of us in the know don't need to pay that.
So if you wanted a copy but didn't get one on the first go-around, you will
have another chance!

waist & shoulder seams. It's going to be coral with some sort of braid
across the bosom a la militaire. This gown's for the Danse Libre
performance at the end of the month.

pourpoint) and a large c 1890s woman's hat. His sense of fashion is
somewhat lacking.

velvet & pearl hat (c 1590), a "kiss-me-quick" bonnet adorned with a
spray of green parrot feathers (c 1840s) and a tall red velvet hennin,
