Surely there must be some fabric shops in Rome, and isnt Italian Silk

Yes they were, in the Lake Como district. I'd ask your hotel concierge to check the phone book for a local mill outlet (do they have such things?!) or fabric store that might carry such things. BTW, Italian phone books are notoriously poorly organized.
