Hi,
Or perhaps they used sticks? Sticks as long as the pleating was going to be like, you know, lye one under, then one over and so on. This method is used for some of the headwears, that pheassant women in Denmark used.
Done with wet water, and taken up again when dry?

I'd hazard a guess that they were made like smocking pleating...probably
basting threads were sewn at regular intervals and then pressed. Don't know
that there is really any "faking it"....other than using a pleater...

Subject: [h-cost] German Renaissance pleating

Hello,

has anyone ever heard of German Renaissance
pleating techniques? "Textiler Hausrat" mentions
sumptuary laws by which a pleated apron must not
cost more than a given price for the "Felterer",
a tradesman specialised in making the pleats, and
some household inventories mention pleating
boards and irons. But how exactly would these
pleats have been made? They are so small and yet
look perfectly parallel when you look at this
picture:

I cannot believe that they were ironed one by one, do you?

How would you make these pleats, or how would you "fake" them for the stage?

Best wishes,
Hanna
