Sounds about right. The circular style brooches (Skrydstrup Brooch,scroll down) http://www.nordicarts.com/viking_brooches_01_HUB.htm would more likely have been used but I have seen some at SCA events use the tortoise brooch instead because that is what they had. I have come to understand that brooch style may vary from region to region and sometimes town to town.
