Nice clear lines.

Interesting.
In most portraits of, say Anne Boleyn, or Catherine Howard, the "crown" part
of a French Hood seems to be over the ears or in front of the ears, unlike
this coin....which does have the coif over the ears but the "crown" behind
them.
You folks might be interested in knowing that the upcoming volume of Medieval
Clothing and Textiles (due out April 2009) includes an article on French
hoods, by Melanie Schuessler (who is on this list). In the article, Melanie
examines artworks and written references (in inventories, letters, etc.) for
evidence on the various components of the headdress and the terms that might
have matched up with each part. The overall shape and other details changed
over time, and the terminology is a real maze as well. This medal is one of
the images Melanie discusses. Her analysis is much too detailed to describe
here (and really requires that you read the whole article) so I won't try to
summarize it, but I'd encourage anyone interested in this headdress to read
the article when it appears.
