My dad did a production of this many years ago. I probably won't be able to explain it well. The heads and hooves were made from metal "rod". They looked like cages - all the rods running vertically - no squares. The hoof parts fit the foot like a pair of skates and were at least a foot tall and were heavy enough that they could "stomp" them. The actors wore all black. If I remember correctly the eyes glowed - otherwise the metal was all black.
