The bodice does not open in the back, but I don't think the buttons on the bodice are functional. It might close with hidden hooks and eyes, but I see no reason why not to go with functioning buttons. If you want to copy this for modern wear, I can imagine starting with a strapless princess-seam dress with sweetheart neckline, and modifying.
