I had a pair of dark red corduroy knickerbockers in the early 1980s. Being used to wearing breeches as a musketeer in the Sealed Knot, and finding them comfortable, I was happy to follow the fashion. I remember my mother telling me years ago that "plus-fours" were so called because they had an extra four inches in the width (rather than the length). Don't know how correct that is. I think we were looking at an old photo of my dad in them. He was never a golfer, so the fashion must have been taken up for general wear.
