That was the reason why: It's *the* wiki package. But I agree that it sucks.
Unfortunately, I also don't have any immediate suggestion for an alternative. Looking through the available software on Wikipedia's comparison of wikis, there are a few PHP ones, and even a couple that use ASL as a license. The question is, if we were to switch to something else, what is the pain of switching all of the markup to whatever the new system is?
