Owen O'Malley commented on HADOOP-538:
--------------------------------------
I was mostly putting in DF since it had been mentioned and I didn't think the
NativeCode class should be buried up in org.apache.hadoop.io.compress. *smile*
I think that forking the process and parsing the results is far more
error-prone that a simple syscall. But that is a side issue in my opinion. I
mostly wanted to set the granularity of NativeCode as returning classes with
the appropriate implementation.

> There has been more than one instance where java.util.zip's {De|In}flater
> classes perform unreliably, a simple wrapper over zlib-1.2.3 (latest stable)
> using java.nio.ByteBuffer (i.e. direct buffers) should go a long way in
> alleviating these woes.
