Perhaps the releases section could be fleshed out with more info on our "stable" link, our roadmap (link to Jira roadmap?), and our release process (ie, what we agree to in HADOOP-1161).

I agree that all this stuff should be somewhere prominent on the site, but we need to be careful not to mix developer documentation with end-user documentation. In particular, the concern is that end-users should not be encouraged to build from subversion, use nightly builds, etc. Releases are ASF products, with certain legal guarantees, and other builds are not ASF products, but only for ASF-internal use. Developers are considered ASF insiders for this purpose. This policy saves us if, e.g., something legally suspect sneaks into subversion so long as it is removed before a release.

Doug, can you remind me why we don't ship hadoop-default or hadoop-site config file that fulfills the "pseudo distributed configuration" on this overview page page?

No good reason. We could include a confg/pseudo-cluster.xml file, that folks could use with 'bin/hadoop -conf conf/pseudo-cluster.xml ...'.

Doug
