Olga Natkovich updated HADOOP-1690:
-----------------------------------

It would be nice to have programatic way to ask about the version so that client can detect a mismatch

No way to programmatically determine hadoop version from binary distribution --------------------------------------------------------------------- -------

                Key: HADOOP-1690
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ HADOOP-1690
            Project: Hadoop
         Issue Type: New Feature
           Reporter: Marco Nicosia
           Priority: Minor

Currently, there's no way (short of starting a hadoop daemon and looking at a web page) to tell what version of Hadoop binaries are installed in a given directory. It'd be great if there were a VERSION file or at least a hadoop-daemon.sh version directive.
