I feel like we are going down a rat hole here.  How do we get our input syntax 
to not surprise users?  users expect to be able to specify posix like file 
strings.  If URL syntax is going to keep throwing surprises and cross platform 
issues at us, maybe we need to create a syntax that doesn;t pull in a lot of 
unwanted baggage?
