To be a little more direct....
Lack of Java 6 support on MacOS has been cited in the past as a reason to hold
back on requiring Java 6 for Hadoop. If you develop on the Mac, you should try
out Owen's suggested open source Java 6 implementation with your IDE and post
your feedback here.
