Would be cool to have some neat math classes for vectors and matrices though.

You can have a look at https://github.com/thomasjungblut/tjungblut-math
It is inspired by the class design of mahout-math. 

Here is the Writable implementation of the vectors: 
https://github.com/thomasjungblut/thomasjungblut-common/blob/master/src/de/jungblut/clustering/model/VectorWritable.java

Just in case you need them, they are Apache2 considered, so you can just copy 
and paste to our project. But it would be cool if you add testcases.
