Hampton and I have discussed this, and we've decided that we're going to bring back part of the functionality of the "~" character. It will now just be a shortcut for wrapping the result of a function call in find_and_preserve. The nested text functionality will still be deprecated, and find_and_preserve will not be part of the default behavior of the "=" command.
