The reason comments aren't mentioned in the docs is that we don't really want people using the messy only-at-the-beginning-of-the-line syntax. Thus, we aren't mentioning comments at all until the next release, when they'll be much nicer.
As to your error, the next step would be to figure out what's causing the error.
