Scratch all that, it was my fault. First, I'm not using 2.2.2, but I am developing on a WinXP box which I don't normally do. I thought I'd upgraded rails but I am still on 2.1.1 The problem was a really old version of haml installed. I just upgraded to 2.0.6 and everything seems fine now.
