Nothing like replying to your own post!!

As I thought at the beginning (before I had been told to find someone who knew 
something about computers!), MS-IME is for inputting characters that are not 
on the keyboard, like Japanese, Korean, Chinese etc.  It would appear that I 
am right (tho' I would be happy to be corrected by you lot) that an IME 
doesn't enter the picture when one is inputting English, from an English 
keyboard, to an English program.  And anyway, IME is not a generic term, but 
an M$ one.
