Have you tried ddrescue (the Gnu version) rather than dd_rescue?

I've also had success with GetDataBack (not open source) from 
http://www.runtime.org/ in the past.

Retrodata (http://www.retrodata.co.uk/index.php) are local, reasonably 
priced, and work on a "no data, no fee" basis.  I've had dealings with 
them once and they seemed to know what they were doing.
