It works!!  At first the recording was too quiet, so it wasn't quite plug and 
play.  However, I have not spent several months trying to get a mic going to 
no avail.

I used to know absolutely nothing, nada, zilch.  Now I know _almost_ nothing.  
So I found how to adjust the mixer in gnome-sound-recorder, added the Mic 
boost switch to the visible options, selected it.

And it now *works*. \o/ \o/ 

Al - Ubuntu appears to have put me on probation again.  We have called an 
uneasy truce.
