However it (an old Compaq N160) is working perfectly well with Debian Squeeze on it, but it will only work with a wired connection as it doesn't recognise cardbus PCMCIA cards. The vaio I was working on earlier was dual booting with XP and finds the wireless network jut fine under that OS. So I modded grub3 so as to boot by default into XP and passed it over to her. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I had checked /etc/resolv.conf (managed by resolvconf) and that correctly has the Zen DNS servers I use on all my systems so not a problem in that respect. I am pretty sure it was getting an IP address correctly and I could in fact ping 192.168.1.1, the address of the router, just unable to 'ping 212.23.6.100' my usual check for access to the web. I was about to install wpa_supplicant and wpagui when my wife's laptop had its hissy fit following an update and refused to run XP, so I'll have to wait until she isn't using the vaio I have now passed over to her before I can have another play at getting Debian to connect wirelessly. I will try the iwlist command you mention as reading man pages had thrown up that command but I hadn't got around to using it, but I was hoping that wpagui would allow me to search for the wireless network and configure the Essid and password as I have done on the EeePC on several different wireless networks. The Vaio is running LXDE as I wanted to try out alternatives to Gnome 3 before it is forced on Debian users. The main problem with LXDE is that it lacks the bells and whistles of Gome 2 so far as configuration apps are concerned and I was seriously considering going back to XFCE (following in the footsteps of one Linus Torvalds as it happens.) -- John Lewis using Debian sid -- Please post to: Hampshire@mailman.lug.org.uk Web Interface: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/hampshire LUG URL: http://www.hantslug.org.uk --------------------------------------------------------------
