That didn't work, but the CLI did provide a possibly more informative error message: error returned by libusb_claim_interface() = -6LIBMTP PANIC: Unable to initialize device terminate called after throwing an instance of 'MtpErrorCantOpenDevice' what(): Can't open device The phone itself has instructions for file transfer with Windows and Mac computers, but not Linux. As Android is based on Linux, that seems a little odd to me. I have found a way to contact the manufacturer, Motorola. Maybe they can solve the problem.
