IMHO, it's great to no have such easy to choose bad option since it has consequences on the VPN security. If you don't use the remote default gateway as your default one, you'll end up with your system being eventually an entry point gateway to the VPN for the local network it's connected to, or even sometimes for the whole Internet... Also, the idea is to not do too much configuration on the client side since, in a good VPN configuration, everything should be pre-configured at the server side. For example, with OpenVPN the use of the default gateway on remote network depends on that option being sent by the server. The client doesn't need to care about that. With PPTP, I don't know.
