After a couple of days of production run time, I am happy to report that
v1.5.11, with the below suggestions incorporated in my configuration
file, is no longer producing my originally reported problem. Thank you
to everyone who offered assistance!

- using haproxy 1.5.5 and later, remove "option http-server-close".
It will
default to "option http-keep-alive", and see if it's better.
Don't forget to enable "option prefer-last-server" as well to ensure
you'll keep the same connection.
