Amidst increasing number of private radio stations and
their popularity, Prasar Bharati CEO K S Sarma on
Thursday said these stations should be allowed to
broadcast news and current affairs programmes.

"The government must allow private radio stations to
broadcast news and current affairs programmes since
radio can reach more people than any other medium," he
said.

Describing the guidelines under which private radio
stations cannot broadcast news or news programmes as
"illogical", Sarma said "there is no such restriction
in force regarding television channels".

"If we can see news on private TV channels, why can't
we hear it on radio?" he said. Sarma suggested the
Government constitute a national regulatory authority
to monitor the content in private radio stations.

On the allegations that AIR and Doordarshan are filled
with government related news, Sharma said "government
makes news always and nobody can ignore it".

He was speaking at the launch of the book 'handbook of
the media in contemporary India' edited by Uday Sahay,
Deputy Director General of Prasar Bharati in New
Delhi.
