IIMC community radio comes of age 

Plans to acquire 54-seater OB van with latest software
Building up on the positive response to its launch in
September last year, community radio of the Indian
Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) is all set for
expansion. The institute plans to acquire a 54-seater
professional Outdoor Broadcast (OB) van besides adding
another studio this month as part of its efforts to
increase community participation. 

The fully-functional air-conditioned OB van will have
separate areas for working and for the crew. Work area
will include up to four Work stations besides the
latest software for faster processing and editing.

Zee launches new channel for Indonesian viewers in
Bahasa language 

Zee Network has announced the launch of its new
channel, Zee in Indonesia. The channel will be dubbed
in Bahasa, the local language. This is a first for Zee
Network as this channel will appeal to the local
audience in their language. The commercial launch of
the channel in a package, was on March 1, 2006. The
dubbed channel will be telecast from March 13, 2006.

STAR News launches reality show ‘Ye Bharat Desh Hai
Mera’   

STAR News has launched a new programme ‘Ye Bharat Desh
Hai Mera’. The show revolves around issues and viewers
in an engaging exchange of thoughts, words and views.
The show premiered on March 13, 2006 on weekdays in
the 6.30 pm slot. Ye Bharat Desh Hai Mera’ would
attempt to reflect upon social issues and real life
incidents on emotionally gripping and general
human-interest stories as they play out and involve
the viewing audience in the broad direction the issue
might evolve towards.

Walky with FM: Tata Indicom introduces Axesstel P 830   

Even as media companies are discovering newer ways to
reach audiences with their content, telcos are out to
ensure that the hardware is in place. The most recent
of such innovations is the launch of ‘Walky with FM’
by Tata Indicom. 
Customers in several circles are waking up to their FM
stations, thanks to Axesstel P830, which offers access
too 10 FM stations at a price of Rs 1,999. The new
phone was made available in Chennai recently. The
service will prove to be a hit, say Tata Tele
officials, given the growing popularity of FM in
India.

Prasar Bharati likely to come out of Centre’s umbrella


The ministry of information and broadcasting is
expected to ease public broadcaster Prasar Bharati out
of direct government control once the Group of
Ministers (GoM), constituted recently to look into the
overhauling and capital restructuring of Prasar
Bharati, submits its recommendation to the Cabinet.

Race for TRPs hots up among movie channels      

Two movie channels in the offing look set to win over
home audiences. Meanwhile, existing movie channels
like Star Gold have adopted more aggressive marketing
strategies to target new audiences and retain the
existing viewers. With TRPs mostly dependent on the
kind of movies a movie channel shows, channels like
Star Gold are focusing on doing 'tent poles' that the
channel officials believe are giving primary support
in maintaining viewership.

Govt may seek more time for CAS rollout 

The government is likely to file a review petition in
the Delhi High Court seeking more time to roll out the
conditional access system (CAS). The Delhi High Court
has asked the government to roll out CAS in Delhi,
Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata in four weeks. “Four weeks
will not be sufficient to roll out CAS in its complete
form. The government is looking at options including a
review petition to seek more time,” said an
information and broadcasting ministry official.

Madurai Kamaraj University to get community radio       

On the lines of Madras University, Madurai Kamaraj
University (MKU) will also have a community radio,
courtesy Indira Gandhi National Open University
(IGNOU). IGNOU is likely to ink a pact with Madurai
Kamaraj University to install a Frequency Modulation
(FM) studio in the MKU campus, for which spadework is
on. The Electronic Media Production Centre (EMPC), a
media wing of IGNOU, that serves as a nodal resource
centre in production, dissemination and transmission
of educational software in the country, utilising a
wide range of communication tools and techniques, is
entrusted with the task of setting up a Gyan Vani
station (local FM) in Madurai.

FM players to lobby for tax sops, music rights fee      

The newly-formed Association of Radio Operators of
India (AROI), a body of FM radio licencees, has
decided to petition the government on tax sops and
work towards rationalization of music rights fee. In a
meeting held here today, AROI members, approximately
35 in number, including the big ones like Radio City,
Radio Mirchi, the Sun TV group, Adlabs, expressed
serious concern over high rates being demanded for
music rights and also by Prasar Bharati for sharing
its infrastructure with private players in some
cities.

IBN deal part of CNN’s strategy in English language
segment: Cramer

        The Indian news market with its diverse products is a
bonanza for viewers in terms of choice, according to
CNN International MD Chris Cramer. “It’s an
extraordinary news market , which was starting to
explode in 2004 when I last came, and is still doing
so. It’s also a very good thing for consumers in terms
of choice,” Cramer told Indiantelevision.com. On a
visit to India, Cramer is touching base with various
constituents of the broadcast and cable industry,
including CNN’s partner, Global Broadcast Network
(GBN), which runs the CNN IBN news channel.

India Today to launch ‘Men’s Health’ magazine in
May-June 2006   

It is a man’s world or so it seems for the Indian
publishing groups. Soon after men’s magazine ‘Maxim’
hit the stands in India, becoming the second men’s
magazine after ‘Man’s World’, and the debut of
Malayala Manorama Group’s ‘Man’ a fortnight back,
India Today is all set to bring the fourth men’s title
in India with ‘Men’s Health’.

Red FM has announced it plans to hike its ad rates by
20 per cent from April 1. Senior officials at the
radio station, however, prefer to term it as
rationalising its rate card.

Mideast firm Spacetoon targets October launch of kids
channel in India        

Jeddah-based Spacetoon is eyeing the kids channel
space in India. The company is contemplating launching
a 24-hour animation kids channel around September -
October this year. However, at present it is not clear
whether the channel will be launched independently or
in association with an Indian company. Spacetoon Media
Group is headed by Fayez Weiss Al Sabbagh and is a
mammoth kids' entertainment brand for animation
content in the Middle East.

GO 92.5 hikes ad rates by 25 per cent from April 2006   

Media buyers have much on their plate beginning April
2006. Media houses across the board have announced
hiked rate cards and the most recent announcement
comes from Go 92.5, Mid Day Mutlimedia’s radio
division. After a span of two years, Go is inducing a
hike of 25 per cent in its ad rates. Shariq Patel,
Station Head, Go 92.5, informed that the station is
also in the process recruiting sales people across all
locations and levels aggressively.

STAR Plus bets on Rajshri’s love story to strengthen 8
pm slot 

        Rajshri Productions has always been known for
producing family love stories. It carried its legacy
into television with ‘Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki’ on
SaharaOne. Despite the channel being not so popular,
the serial has been wildly successful, garnering a
high TVR of 3.9, which no SaharaOne show has been able
to attain till date.
