Hello Jim and Elmer,
Me too - I am no expert re utility transmissions - but from someone who says
he is(!) I pass on this information.

Forest Moor is close to the town of Harrogate and also adjacent to the
National Security Agency set-up at Menwith Hill. Menwith Hill is mainly
radomes and Forest Moor is believed to be a monitoring facility. But my
correspondent believes there to be transmitting antennas at both sites.

He has 5450 listed on 5450 as GXQ London (Forest Moor) - it's unclear
exactly what this means. Could it be that the Volmet transmissions originate
from West Drayton (near to London) and are broadcast via Forest Moor? We
carried out an experiment at around 1900UTC on the evening of the 19th. My
correspondent lives about 8 miles from Forest Moor and he had very poor
signals on 5450, while the parallel transmission on 11253 was only just
audible. At my location - about 50 miles or so to the west - I had a loud
strong signal on 5450 and a weak to fair one on 11253. Could it be that he
lives in the night-time skip zone so close to the transmitters, but I do
not. We should both have heard West Drayton at similar strengths.

I hope this is of help...........73 Noel R. Green (NW England)

Hi Jim and all.
I'm not an utility expert, but I'd say that there are two stations in the
same frequency. "GXQ" resembles the identification that airports use, while
MPL2 sounds more like a military designator. Possibly military and civil
aviation are sharing the same frequency.

Just a thought...

I received a nice QSL card from VT Communications in Harrogate, North
Yorkshire, UK for my reception of the VOLMET on 5450 kHz. I originally had
this listed in my log as West Drayton RAF VOLMET call sign MPL2. However,
the card lists what appears to be a call sign of "GXQ." My question is, what
is the correct nomenclature and call sign for this VOLMET on 5450 kHz? The
station was logged last March 2007. Thanks for any clarification anyone can
provide.

Hello all,
This is interesting. 5450 can be heard here on the island of Gotland almost
always! Just now with really good strength. On the other hand, 11253 was not
audible at all at the moment. So air waves really jump! What is the power on
such a VOLMET station?
