Liberty Media Execs Join Sirius XM Board

According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, two more
Liberty Media executives have joined the board of Sirius XM Radio. Liberty got
the right to appoint up to six board members as part of its multimillion-dollar
investment in Sirius XM.

New on the board are Liberty Chairman John Malone and SVP/Treasurer David
Flowers. They join Liberty CEO Greg Maffei, who was elected to the board in
March.

Additionally, Liberty has converted 11.5 million shares of series B-2 preferred
stock in Sirius XM to series B-1 preferred stock. The B-1 stock can be
converted into shares of common stock at any time.

9541, R. Solomon Islands BC, Haniara. April-24 0635-0650 English pop music
selections, 0645 English announcements by YL, short music, OM talks. Some
fading but good signal maybe by the proximity of gray-line there, at peak 44333
(lob-B).

7254, R. Mauritanie, Nouakchott. April-24 0909-0922 French OM talks. Noisy, bad
propagation this morning 24422 (lob-B).

3985, Croatian Radio, Deanovec. April-25 Croatian(sch) 0300-0312 OM talks, YL
seeming outside and alternating with studio OM, prevailling OM. 24322 (lob-B).

4835, Bolivia, R. Virgen de Remedios(tentative), Tupiza. April-25 Spanish 0315
out male and studio female in a religious talks, "stay escuchando Informe
Cat?lico Mundial", "jo soy Cat?lico mas no demasiado", 0335 religious music
"stay escuchando Radio Catolica Mundial", 0356 abrupt sign off. It could be R.
Maran?n but by modulation characteristics, massive religious content, the
mentioning of R. Catolica Mundial already heard in others Virgen de Remedios'
transmissions, my choice goes to V.R.. Despite after 41 minutes of religious
content, i don't heard a definitive ID. At peaks the signal was so good that it
could be listenable outside L.A., 34333 (lob-B).

Quick ? look at your cell phone, or glance your watch. What time is it right
now?
Oh, really?
How can you be so sure?
That timepiece has to base its claims on something. When you set it, you
told your microwave or your watch what time it was. You got that time from a
different clock somewhere else. Meanwhile, a little computer or a piece of
quartz has been keeping track for you, but what does it actually track? What
is a minute, anyway? What?s a second?
At some point, somebody has to keep an eye on those definition so seconds
don?t get too short or too long, messing up everything from GPS satellites
to the stock market to your paycheck. (Did you really work eight hours
yesterday? According to whose clock?)
You can thank a bunch of radio engineers in Fort Collins for helping keep
all that straight.
Four engineers in a compound northeast of the city keep watch, as it were,
over the official atomic clock, and therefore the official time, of the
United States.
The antennas at radio stations WWV and WWVB broadcast radio waves that
synchronize everything from the stock market to traffic lights to your alarm
clock. WWV broadcasts a signal you can hear; WWVB broadcasts a signal only
your radio-controlled clock will recognize.
?Your computer clock has a crystal ? it has the ability to keep your time,?
said Douglas Sutton, an engineer with the National Institute of Standards
and Technology. But, he pointed out, it has its limitations. Eventually, the
clock will be fast or slow, and you?ll have to correct it.
?Say, in one week, you lose a second,? Sutton said. ?Well, it?s our job to
make sure you can correct that back to the proper time, because you?re
referencing the standard.?
The windswept home of the nation?s timekeepers ? where that standard is
maintained ? seems like any other rural site, complete with antelope tracks
through the snow. But that?s before you see the copper-lined doors, the
flickering, unplugged fluorescent lights powered by ambient energy and the
massive antenna towers.
Before the proliferation of radio-controlled clocks ? there are 3 million to
4 million such clocks in the U.S. ? government agencies were the atomic
clock?s main users. Civilian use started in the early 1990s, and now,
radio-controlled clocks (commonly but inaccurately called ?atomic?) are
widely available, often for a few dollars.
But they wouldn?t work ? whether in Hilton Head, S.C., or Walla Walla,
Wash. ? without the radio towers based in Fort Collins.
For the complete story, go to www.fortcollinsnow.com.
WWV can be heard with any shortwave radio. A typical shortwave radio
provides coverage from about 150 kHz to about 30 MHz. WWV broadcasts the
time at 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 20 MHz.
Telephone: Call (303) 499-7111 for WWV or (808) 335-4363 for WWVH, the
atomic clock broadcast in Hawaii.
Online: The NIST Internet Time Service allows users to synchronize their
computer clocks via the Internet. Most of the servers are in Boulder. The
service requires a download that you can configure to access a specific
server. Visit nist.time.gov to learn more.

Dear Radio Friends

I will be visiting Syria once again in 2 weeks from now and will stay there one
month. A visit to Syria is always combined with a visit to my very good friends
at Radio Damascus.

Here is an excerpt of a letter a sent them today.

"... something about the technical side of Radio Damascus. As enthusiast as I
applause you and the whole team of Radio Damascus in bringing us every day this
excellent mix of news and feature programs, unfortunately the technical
problems do persist :
a) The modulation of the signal on the shortwave transmitters has been reduced
to almost zero, making it practically impossible to listen to Radio Damascus on
shortwave. As I also asked in my former letter : "I really wonder if nothing
can be done to repair the shortwave transmitters at Adra station as the
modulation problem has been going on for years. I am sure you must be getting
these same reports from listeners from other language sections from all parts
of the world too. Is it a problem of financing, getting funds to buy spare
parts for the transmitters (tubes...)? Is upper management aware of the
problems at Adra? "

b) Although RTV Syria has now an English website, "Syria Online", at
http://www.syriaonline.sy, there is NO link whatever to the audio recording of
Radio Damascus' foreign language programs.
There is even, after all this time, still no (English) link to these recording
on the general Arabic RTV Syria site at http://www.rtv.gov.sy .

c) Besides the English and German program recordings the other language
recordings (French, Spanish, Russian, Turkish, Hebrew are still not online.
When will these recordings come online?

d) For the last couple of days the RTV website and audio recordings have been
extremely slow to download. The "Syria Online" website on the other hand is
loading very fast. This makes me to conclude that the two websites, RTV Arabic
and "Syria Online" in English is coming from two different servers.
Please ask the IT-department to speed up the RTV website server and please put
a link in English on the RTV Syria AND "Syria Online" homepage pointing to the
daily audio recordings from Radio Damascus.

e) It looks that the good people of the Spanish section of Radio Damascus got
tired of waiting as they launched their own unofficial website with the daily
audio recording? (in excellent quality!) of the Spanish program. You can find
it here :

http://aquidamasco.podomatic.com .

Why doesn't the internet and IT department of RTV Syria make work of making a
real professional Radio Damascus website with the audio recordings of all the
different language sections?

f) The good news on the technical front is that the satellite feeds are working
well. It is a great pleasure to listen to Radio Damascus through the Hotbird
satellite here in Belgium in digital audio quality. Please please, keep these
satellite feeds on the air!"

greetings

Kris Janssen

I seriously doubt anyone is deliberately jamming LRA36, let alone a woodpecker,
but some incidental QRM may have sounded like that. The clip is all music until
about 75%, then announcements, shortly followed by some pulse bursts, not like
the original OTH radar Soviet woodpecker. It`s at Base Esperanza; I don`t think
San Gabriel is a place name; it`s named for some archangel for some reason. 73,

Glenn,

A partir do
minuto 04:48 da grava??o o OM anuncia a ID, os dias da semana e a frequ?ncia
de 15476 kHz e logo ap?s YL continua com a programa??o.

I seriously doubt anyone is deliberately jamming LRA36, let alone a
woodpecker, but some incidental QRM may have sounded like that. The clip is
all music until about 75%, then announcements, shortly followed by some
pulse bursts, not like the original OTH radar Soviet woodpecker. It`s at
Base Esperanza; I don`t think San Gabriel is a place name; it`s named for
some archangel for some reason. 73, Glenn Hauser

Jorge, Didn`t you see the info in DXLD 9-031 from CVC HQ in UK about the four
African languages they now use on 4965? Not including Afrikaans which is a
European language closely related to Dutch. Altho the Afrikaner immigrants`
descendants like to think of themselves as ``Africans`` (Glenn Hauser, DXLD)
Viz.:

Hi again Glen[n], I was able to get the schedule for you - new to me
as well.

Radio Christian Voice 6065 and 4965 kHz from Zambia is mostly given
over to four local languages now - Bemba, Tonga, Nyanja and Lozi.
Schedule attached - I can't say if the time shown is Central African
Time (CAT - UT + 2 hrs) or UT, but suspect CAT. There is English being
aired too. It's not clear since everything is colour coded, but I
guess that if a language isn't written explicitly with a programme in
the schedule, then it's English. Radio Christian Voice in English is
also on FM in 4 cities in Zambia. Hope that helps again. Regards
(Andrew Flynn, CVC, DXLD)

Yes, thanks! The .xls schedule grid is indeed color-coded for the four
languages above, and altho many of the program titles are shown in
English, those are in the respective colored blox. Only a few blox are
explicitly English in a fifth color:
Basics of the Bible, daily 0000-0200 [2200-2400 UT]
News Week in All, Sunday 1800-1900 [1600-1700 UT]

Unfortunately the schedule comes out rather jumbled when we try to
convert it to text, but anyhow, a lot of it is in those four African
languages. The schedule starts with 0600 at the top, which makes it
more likely to be local time than UT (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

Glenn and other colleagues.

See the important information of Mr Thiago de Bras?lia:

?Esse QRM ? muito provavelmente de um OTHR dos EUA (Over The Horizon Radar),

eles normalmente ficam alternando entre v?rias frequencias no espectro HF e

no caso da grava??o do Jorge ele estava numa frequ?ncia pr?xima. Ou seja,

n?o classificaria como jamming.
