Hi Horacio,

I use a RCA RP5140 handheld recorder. It's about half the width of a pack of
cigarettes, but slightly taller and the same depth. It records directly into
MP3 format. It doesn't have a line-in jack, but it does have a microphone-in
jack. So I simply use an attenuating cable from my radio (Drake R8) to the
recorder.

Frys.com has the recorder for roughly 30USD, which is a lot less than 500USD.
Amazon.com also used to sell them until recently.

It uses two AAA batteries, which is unfortunate. I would have preferred AA
batteries. But I use rechargeable AAA batteries, so it's not a problem.

If you have a friend in the US who buys stuff for you, I'd say have him buy
the recorder at Frys.com and then have him mail it to you.

BTW, I have no connection whatsoever with RCA or Frys or Amazon or anything
mentioned in this email. I'm just a satisfied customer, putting in his two
cents.

 Hope this helps.

Subject: [HCDX] Sign of modern times... audio cassettes ar becoming scarce...

Sign of times... audio cassettes begin to be scarce in shops overhere in
Uruguay, So. America. The down side of this is that mp3 recorders with "line
in" input capable of recording directly from the radio set are still very
uncommon in the market, and I believe this also happens globally from my search
on the Web.

I asked in a specialized audio shop for mp3 recorders, yesterday and the model
they sell is around USD 500,oo. That's intended for professionals but not for
more general use.

I used a Zen Creative Nano I bought in 2005 in Spain but it became unusable
when it felt from my hands a few months ago. Other Creative mp3 with recording
line-in capabilities I know of had problems caused by its display generating
noise in the recording.
