Warm greetings to all of you !

First of all, sorry for what happened in Haiti... I hope this means more
Haitian immigration which is a good thing for me, as I love Hatian food and
music, especially Cabri and grillot...

Into the logs (mostly highlights, as I'm too buzy with my new AM Stereo toy, a
Sony SRF-A1 walkman bought from EBay, in order to type more):

Trans-Atlantic DX

153 Germany DLF, Donebach / Algeria RTA Radio Wahad, Bechar JAN 10 0331 UTC -
Arabic programming mixed with jazz music. Good with nothing in the way of noise
thanks to an electricity blackout ! (Chiochiu-QC)

225 POLAND Polski Radio 1, Solec Kujawski JAN 13 0559 UTC - Time pips, then
ID "Polski Radio Warshov, program ?" (I don't speak Polish), then into news.
Very good signal, best reception ever ! Semi-regular, though they seldom fade
up strongly ! Heard on the Grundig G5 ULR / PK LW loop combo ! (Chiochiu-QC)

270 CZECH REPUBLIC Cezky Rozhlas - Radio Zurnal JAN 13 0536 UTC - playing US
pops and male clearly speaking in Czech. It's the 2nd or 3rd I have audio on
269 in AM Narrow mode on the Sangean ACS-818 CST / PK LW loop combo, though
never with such a good SIO 422 ! (Chiochiu-QC)

Pan-American DX

600 CUBA CMKV Radio Rebelde, Urbano Norrís JAN 15 2350 UTC - man talking with
passion about "la revolución cubana" leading to a cumbia song. Good, in CKAT
null ! Heard with the Sony SRF-A1 walkman and it's own built-in ferrite rod
antenna in AM ST mode with the cumbia song jumping from one channel to another
with a weak domestic rumble in the other channel... I think this walkman gives
a stereo-like effect to all stations (hello Phil Laruse, who had a similar
occurance with CHNC-610) ! (Chiochiu-QC)

710 CUBA Radio Rebelde synchros JAN 15 2350 UTC - // 600 with some splatter
from next-to-adjacent locals on 690 and 730. Over WOR though ! Heard on the
Sony SRF-A1 walkman with its built-in ferrite rod antenna ! (Chiochiu-QC)

780 VENEZUELA YVNM Radio Coro JAN 15 0520 UTC - HJ vallenato mx, followed by a
couple of canned announcements such as "¡La publicidad radial es más efectiva,
más economica y con mayores beneficios! ¡Anuncie sú producto hoy!", full ID,
then into a salsa number. Poor reception, a few good peaks, but very deep
fadings, mostly weak and rarely good. SINPO 35512. Heard on the Sanyo MCD-S830
/ PK AM loop combo with WBBM carefully nulled out ! Conditions toward Latin
America generally very poor. Even Radio Coro is very unimpressive as you can
see... TA DX is much better ! (Chiochiu-QC)

Domestic North American DX

630 CFCO Chattam, ON JAN 15 1706 EST - playing a contemporary country song with
electric guitar on one ear and drums on the other one. Switch beetwen both due
to "platform motion"... Carried hockey later, after 1930 EST, after an ad for a
sweater ! With so much talk: WPRO, CFCO, WMAL et al, I though they went dark,
due to their 92.9 simulcast, which is a shame, as it is my best source of
Motorola C-Quam DXing ! (BC-QC)

890 WLS Chicago, IL JAN 15 2018 EST - Heard Emerson Lake and Palmer "welcome
back my friend to the show that never ends, come inside, come inside..."
symphonic prog-rock gem on the right ear and the talkshow host on the left ear
! Yes, and with NO platform motion effect, in null of WCBS-880 HD QRM !
Excellent, almost local-like ! (BC-QC)

940 CINW Montréal, QC JAN 15 1505 EST - heard with monaural music on the right
ear and just powerline noises on the left one as I was in the center of the
local noise storm that Hydro Québec will solve tonight ! It appears this
walkman brings platform motion effect and stereo where it doesn't belong as
well as where it REALLY belongs. CINW never used stereo and is not doing so
today either ! (BC-QC)

1280 CFMB Montréal, QC JAN 15 1625 EST - with an Italian punk-rock classic from
the early 80s. Heard with some platform motion effect as I nulled them out, I
was degradating their city grade reception here in Pierrefonds ! (BC-QC)

1310 CIWW Ottawa, ON JAN 15 1536 EST - Heard with one 70s song alternating
between left and right ear, platform motion effect with stereo-like separation
! Mixing with WORC ! (BC-QC)

1310 WORC Worchester, MA JAN 15 1536 EST - using "La Mega" and "Power Trece
Diez" slogans and playing trop mx... At 1630 EST, after a Zacaría Ferreira
track, the man anncr told his listeners he will be live in Massachussets, on
stage ! Very good, over / under CIWW / others on the Sony SRF-A1 barefoot ! Are
they using stereo ? I couldn't really tell ! (BC-QC)

1340 WIRY Plattsburg, NY JAN 15 1108 EST - playing a funky song from the late
70s or early 80s with a nice separation between the funky guitar and the drums
that were trading places due to the "platform motion" effect... Its the first
time I hear anything close to Dance Music on this otherwise eclectic Home Town
broadcaster ! Heard on the Sony SRF-A1 / PK AM loop combo ! There was some
skywave intereference from other 'graveyarders', mainly WSTJ and WMSA, causing
this platform motion shift. Daytime skip was too good today, as it disturbed
this fringe Motorola C-Quam semi-local with really bothersome skip signals I'd
rather not hear, as they weren't stereo ! (BC-QC)

1610 CJWI Montréal, QC JAN 15 - often overtaked by overspills from CFAV-1570,
some huge 40 kHz away ! (BC-QC)

Additionnal comments:

I got today the Saony SRF-A1 walkman from EBay... With the attemp to a
terrorist attack, the postal service has been dramatically slow, so I'm happy
it finally made here, but not only happy, VERY enthousiastic about it !

At first, I was disappointed... Using the Sanyo MCD-S830 / PK AM loop in order
to listen to the regular monaural reception of fringe semi-local WIRY-1340 (in
null of the stronger semi-local WMSA in Massena, NY), they were fading in and
out and mixing with two other "graveyarders"... I was too excited to let this
down and tryed anyway to put the passive PK AM loop close to the Sony SRF-A1
and surprise, the kicked in with tune, not perfect, some platform motion, but
still (for me!) a beautiful Hi-Fi sound with nice and almost clean stereo
separation ! Without the induction-ready PK AM loop, the signal was too weak to
trigger the stereo beacon on my Sony SRF-A1 ! I just can't wait for the summer
days when everything groundwave is heard with no daytime skywave QRM ! Its hard
to tell how it works, has anyone ever used a Sony SRF-A1 succesfully for fringe
AMS DXing ?

Also, I begun advanced Spanish classed in order to become a translator, at UQAM
and things were not too bad, though it's hard to tell after "only" the first
week !

This report is brought to you by Bogdan Alexandru Chiochiu, DXing from
Pierrefonds (Montreal's West Island), QC using his Sony SRF-A1 walkman, both
barefoot and aided by the PK AM loop. Also using the Sangean ACS-818 CST / PK
LW loop. Last, but not least, the Grundig G5 ULR is doing a fine job with the
PK LW loop on 153-225 kHz as well !

May the good DX be with you !
Bogdan Chiochiu
