ZANZIBAR - 6015, Voice of Tanzania - Zanzibar, aka the former RTZ, well heard
0300-0340+ 1/30, thanks to Ron Howard's tip! Decent African propagation this
nite but more importantly, fqy nice and clear other than the awful splatter
from 6020. Sig fair to occasionally fading-in to good level. Checked fqy
0258
and could detect carrier but not hear anything -- missed any IS -- but
realized
about 0300 YL anmts suddenly there, in progress, very muffled. Signal faded
up
so that at 0301.20 Islamic call to prayer very well heard, muzzein sadly
chanting for about 5 minutes with long pauses between verses. 0306 thru bottom
of the hour, OM giving speech or narrative, excited at times, either a
political
or religious exhortation. Quick mx interlude 0316 broke in, and then OM
speech
resuming. YL with possible news at bottom of hour, also hearing echoey,
excited
man, possible taped sports report or the like. 0341 orch mx with YL, probably
ad. Gotta hand it to the R8B on this one, rig did well: the AM sync
detection
mode seemed to really pull this out of the mud at times. Never heard
Zanzibar
on this fqy before and, in fact, had not heard Zanzibar in 30 years, since the
days when RTZ hung out on 3339 kHz and Mr. Omar M. Omar delighted in teasing
DXers with letters that explicitly non-verified. Again, thanks again for the
tip to Ron Howard, the Nomad DXer of the Asilomar Beach State Park! (R Perry,
Illinois)

BOLIVIA - 6134.77, R. Santa Cruz, 1009-1045+ 1/30, good time to tune as usual
6135 QRM (initially) absent early morning. Sounded like remote newsfeed at
tune-in, 1018 brief musica folklorica break and then OM ancr 1019 and into
romantic guitar ballad. 1021 local time ck and mentions of ". . . boliviano . .
.La Paz" and "musica del campo" and then into extremely rustic musica
folklorica
segment. Yelling/singing women a capella with only percussion accompaniment.
1027 taped ID by OM & YL, clear mention ". . . Radio Santa Cruz . . . onda
corta
. . ." 1029 ads and another ID 1029.46, into slow huayno-type ballad by OM
with
accordianlike instrument. QRM coming up at this point and big het, but still
able to follow until 1045 tune out. (R Perry, Illinois)

MEXICO - 6010, Radio Mil, daily visitor morning and night, heard 1/30 booming
in
1035 with OA pops, DJ wishing folks muy buenos dias and formula ID as "Esta
escuchando . . . Radio Mil, desde Mexico!". Signal holds up well after
daybreak
locally, heard still hanging in there past 1300 GMT. (R Perry, Illinois)

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - 6025.06, tent. Radio Amanecer, Santo Domingo, 1202-1240+
1/29, OM SS at tune-in talking about "La Familia . . . nuestro salud . . .
Republica Dominicana . . ." Fair to good sig, very deep fades and lots of side
splatter. 1211 mx breaker by OM with t/ck. Sig fading by 1215 when OM
mentioned "iglesia" and "Dominicana". 1222 thot caught the ID for R Amanecer
but
not 100% sure. Still going at 1240 with piano mx poss hymn. This one needs
more work. (R Perry, Illinois)

UNID LA (HONDURAS?) - 3250.1, Unid. fading up at 1130 on 1/29, YL and OM in
dialogue, weak and hard to tell lang but cadence could have been SS.
Suspecting
R. Luz Y Vida, Honduras and will keep at this fqy. (R Perry, Illinois)

UNID LA (DOM REPUBLIC?) - 5954.24, "La Voz de ____ " ID heard at 0055 1/29 with
terrible het and slop. Back at 0427 recheck with LA romantic vocals and again,
at 0430, YL ID as "La Voz de ____". Can't make it out. There are some reports
of a "Radio Republica" on this precise off-fqy, too, from Costa Rica but too
early to say. (R Perry, Illinois)

UNID (AFRICAN?) - 4780, 0445-0510, Unid African? Boomy audio. OM anmts at
top
of hr for 3 mins, then into mainly nondescript instrumental music, but there
was
one chantlike, very ethnic selection interspersed -- almost sounded like Thai
hilltribe type stringed instrument with vocalist. Fair sig at times but rather
muffled and couldn't read the lang. Could have even been EE. Interesting one
to retry. (R Perry, Illinois)

to honour Wolfgang for his persistent and exceptional contribution, also
beyond the BC-DX TopNews, which includes contributions to various
magazines, mailing lists (also this one, HCDX), and also amateur radio
band monitoring against intruders.

The AGDX Board has agreed to award the status of Honorary Member to
Wolfgang.

We all are very thankful for his quality contibutions over the many years,
and we wish him continuing achievements and fun.

** CHINA. Firedrake Jan 30:
8400, at 1352, JBA with flutter
9380, at 1354, fair vs presumed DW in Chinese, not audible, not 1400+
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. RHC Sunday Jan 30 check: at 1412 the special ``Al?, Presidente``
frequencies are on, 13750, 15370 and 17750, the latter strong but
undermodulated with buzzes, but no separate programming, all // mainstream RHC
11690, 11730, 11760, 13780, 15120, 15230; while 12040 and 15360 are absent.
Recheck at 1655: 17750, 15370 and 13750 still on and still no-show Hugazo, //
others.

Gone again! Esperanto from RHC scheduled Sundays 1500-1530 on 11760, but Jan 30
at 1510, just Spanish // numerous other frequencies in filatelia show (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PALAU. 9950, Jan 30 at 1451, playing music including riff from ``Touch Me``
by The Doors, 1453 Japanese talk, 1457 giving URL with // pronounced ``surashu,
surashu``, and schedule mentioning kirohertsu several times, to 1459*. Is
Furusato no Kaze, 100 kW, 345 degrees from Koror via T8WH; better signal than
neighbor 9955 WRMI (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** RUSSIA [and non]. 6075, R. Rossii, no motorboating and not much program
audio either Jan 30 at 1359, but could hear 1400+ timesignal, mixing with
Taipei ID and then more Chinese from jamming. Hard to tell when Pet/Kam carrier
goes off, without the motorboating roar! No sign of 2MTL or 8GAL 6074 until
1402 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. VOT was reported to have changed frequency for English to NAm at
23-24: ``Frequency changes for Voice of Turkey effective from Jan. 14:
2300-2357 NF 7335+EMR 500 kW / 310 deg to NoAm, ex 5960 English; + co-channel
WHRI Angel 1/5 in English on Sat (DX Mix News, Bulgaria, Jan 18 via DXLD
11-03)``

And I finally get around to checking it on Saturday January 29 at 2330: nothing
but WHRI audible on 7335, but there is something weak on 5960, seems English,
bothered by much stronger and bleeding DentroCuban Jamming Command on 5955
against R. Rep?blica on 5954.2v. That could certainly motivate VOT to move, but
onto a frequency occupied by WHRI?!

To be sure, I listen again at 2352, and do hear the VOT IS on 5960. So the
change has NOT been made, or if it was, they have gone back to 5960, or even
less likely, gone back on Saturdays only, possibly the only day of week WHRI is
really on 7335, altho HFCC shows 17 = Sunday and Saturday.

Yet the latest HFCC also shows TRT on 7335 as if it had been there all the time
since 31 Oct! And no listing for 5960 where it really was and is. Far too many
changes in HFCC are masked by showing incorrect dates in effect (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1549 monitoring: Saturday Jan 29 at 1846, very poor
but audible on 9955, WRN via WRMI, no jamming. Jeff White reconfirms that WRMI
is on the air Sat & Sun only in the 17-22 UT period, taking a break on
weekdays, all with WRN relays. And WOR is also scheduled at the same time on
Sundays.

3215, WWCR at 0735 UT Sun Jan 30, WOR confirmed. 9955, WRMI at 1647 Sunday,
also confirmed, with usual SAH from YFR Taiwan, but generally atop it, and no
jamming unlike 9965.

Next chances on 9955: Sun 1830, Mon 1230, 2230, Tue 1630, Wed 0200, 1630; 7415
WBCQ: Tue 2000 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9955, lovely Andean music from WRMI, ``Aires Andinos`` show, UT Sun
Jan 30 at 0533, so I settle back to listen for the rest of the half hour:
unfortunately, I just caught it at a peak, as soon obscured by Cuban jamming
pulses, and then alternating peaking and troughing. Our Friend in Habana finds
such innocent programming a threat to the oppressed DentroCubans --- even this
must be jammed. Tnx a lot, Arnie!

Some other times for ``Aires Andinos`` on the WRMI schedule: Wed 1230, Thu
0100, Sat 1200. The 1200 and 1230 are probably jammed too; maybe has a chance
at 01. Or give up and listen to webcast (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A [non]. 15420, Jan 29 at 1847, I am hearing nothing but BBCWS in
English via SOUTH AFRICA, when normally there is a collision with WBCQ on CUSB.
Global Spirit Proclamation, the androgynous anapest from Fence Lake NM, is
supposedly scheduled 7 days a week at 18-22 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1190, Jan 30 at 1433 UT, Spanish caught my ear, mostly atop
jumble of multiple stations, talking about a trip to M?rida, Yucat?n. Since it
seems from WNW/ESE, and the hour is rather late, I don`t think it is an XE, and
there are no Yucatecans on 1190. Maybe an infomercial. Lasted about 5 minutes
before losing out. Several US stations on 1190 are Spanish, per NRC AM Log, in
AZ, FL, GA, MS (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7534-SSB, Jan 30 at 0618, 2-way in English, one side good, the
other JBA or not at all during long pauses. The one I can hear with some engine
noise in background, calls his contact Mike, mentions ``lockers``, ``only got
one drum``; 0623 ``awful big ocean here``; ``not one --ck--- boat in 12
miles``, ``I just don`t see anything``. 0628+ nothing more heard, no IDs.
Sounded like he was somewhat distressed.

What else has been reported on 7534? Searching the 31,130 posts so far on the
UDXF yg, I get two hits on 7534 from 2006 and 2007y, neither relevant (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

Hallo - the new software CuteSDR provides exciting additions to RFSpace's
software defined radio, SDR. In this short video, two of them are
demonstrated:
* reception of a shortwave broadcaster (All India Radio "Vividh Bharati",
9870 kHz) with synchro detection in pseudo stereo. This is: the lower
sideband on the left ear, the upper sideband on the right ear. This gives
the striking experience of phase differences in both sidebands due to
selective fading. Also a-symmetrical tuning of the bandwidth is provided to
cope with interference in one sideband. It sounds like a merry-go-round.
["Shortwave on speed"]
* A very versatile AGC, which enhances intelligibility of not only SSB
signals. Here Shannon VOLMET from Ireland on 5.505 kHz has been used as an
example.

Look at YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxlSfewC8m4

Thanks to RFSpace, to having provided this software, working on a PC, as
even on an MAC!

DJIBOUTI: 4780, Djibouti *0300-0330+ 1/31, thanks to all who suggested this
(Don, Fergy, others). Heard tonight from 0250 open carrier, orchl NA at 0300
f/by repeating IS of flute and what seemed like fiddle-type instrument. Into
Islamic morning Call to Prayer at 0301.28-0317 (long form!). Then OM narration
or news in AA to 0332, when mx show opened. Modern, western influenced,
pop-sounding AA recording featuring organ, base, flute and mixed group of
singers. S9+++ at 0335 tune out. (R Perry, Illinois)

COSTA RICA: 5954.24, Radio Republica, Guapiles. Turns out my unid indeed is
Radio Republica, the station targeting bcsts to Cuba from xmtrs reportedly in
Guapiles, Costa Rica. Heard 0236-0256 on 1/31, deep fades, and lucked out with
nice recorded ID by YL at peak of fade cycle at 0238: "Esta es Radio
Republica,
La Voz del Pueblo . . . nuestro programa 'Sorprisa Musical' . . . la mejor de
musica . . ." and then a snippet from Queen's "We Will Rock You" as part of the
theme. Into program of hot merengue dance music and pops. At 0249 again,
"....un lugar con la mejor de musica . . . Radio Republica . . .". At 0255,
the
sound of a fax machine and then words said in English, haltingly, "World Wide
Web". Sig was on bottom of a fade cycle, but could hear a URL was being given,
couldn't read it. Fqy anmt too, "en la banda de 49 metros". (R Perry,
