** ALBANIA [non]. 15770, Mon Jan 6 at 2057, rock music on WRMI, feared
not R. Tirana relay until I hear their IS at 2059 closing (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** AUSTRALIA. Reply from Tim Gaynor Jan 6, about bushfires: ``Hi
Glenn, No fires in my area at Gunnedah. Just smoke from other fires
elsewhere. Appreciate your concerns but we're ok here, Best regards,
Tim Gaynor, Unique Radio, Gunnedah NSW, Australia`` (Glenn Hauser,
WOR)

** COLOMBIA [non]. 5910, Jan 7 at 0226, S9 music and Romanian
announcement from RRI // 7340, as scheduled 0100-0300, 300 kW, 307
degrees to E North America. NO sign of Alcarav?n Radio as reported by
a DXer in New Jersey to the NASWA Flashsheet, with ID at 0214 UT Dec
31, and no mention of RRI. Alcarav?n has been off the air for about a
sesquiyear. Possibly back the night before NY eve?? RRI would have had
to be missing simultaneously. 5910 is further blocked at 0300-0500 by
China via Cuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15370 // 15140 // 11880, Jan 5 at 2111, all three RHC are in
Kriyol, rather than supposedly Portuguese, Spanish, Arabic, as in
EiBi; or Portuguese, French and French as in WRTH 2020. Something`s
always wrong at RHC :::: (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** PERU. 5980, Jan 6 at 2353, JBA carrier from R. Chaski vs Cuban
jamming, until cutoff at 2354:05*, My last check was Dec 29 until
2354:22, i.e. 17 seconds earlier now, 8 days later, averaging 2.125
seconds slippage per noctem (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ROMANIA. Re: ``7345, Dec 30 at 0718, RRI mailbag in German reading
letters at some length; 307 degree beam from Ziganeschti also serves
North America beyond. Spelling it fonetikaly into German raises the
question whether the name be related to Gypsies, or rather Roma. Say,
could that name be linked to Romania? Altho hardly Latinate``

Erich Bergmann, Germany, replies: ``Hi Glenn, It is difficult to say
if Tiganesti is related to the Romanian term ?tigani? which means
Gipsy. There are a few villages in Romania with this name. By the way
the village Tiganesti with the transmitter site was included in 1968
in the village Ciolpan and took also this name. Originally the village
Tiganesti took its name about the year 1800 from the nearby monastery
and lake with the same name. The term ?tigani? is generally
substituted nowadays by Sinti and Roma, they have their origins in
some parts of India from where they migrated to Europe a few hundreds
years ago. On the other hand Roma and Romania are not linked. 73s
Erich`` (Glenn Hauser, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960, Jan 6 at 2352, VOT English is on tonight, and a
little later than usual, just now getting to closing headlines (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 379-MCW, Jan 6 at 0712-0715 UT, two ND beacons mixing, DL,
500 watts from Duluth - Pike Lake MN; and BRA, 400 watts from
Asheville - Broad River NC. I was tuned to 377-USB (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)
