The Courtesy Program Committee (CPC) of the National Radio Club and
International Radio Club of America is excited to announce another DX Test. We
encourage all DXers to join the IRCA and NRC. Both clubs have low-cost
memberships available, and your dues help provide the resources needed to
coordinate these tests, provide QSLs, and conduct outreach to the broadcasting
community.

Join today at:

https://nationalradioclub.org/member/join.html?

?

The Courtesy Program Committee (CPC) of the National Radio Club and
International Radio Club of America is pleased to announce another test of
Class D (Daytime only) station, WDFB 1170, in Junction City (Danville),
Kentucky.

Traffic Manager Cindy Pike explained, ?WDFB broadcasts Christian radio to
Central Kentucky, and we pride ourselves on broadcasting a great variety of
gospel music with some that have been performed live in our studios. This gives
the station a unique sound, and it has become a fixture in our community. To
ensure that our listeners enjoy the best possible sound, we?ll do some
maintenance on our transmitter and audio chain. To my knowledge, this is the
first testing we?ve done in almost twenty years.?

The test will feature mainly test tones and Morse Code, but Cindy opted to
replace our normal computer-voiced announcement in favor of a more authentic
sample of WDFB?s history. The station began in 1985, as a ministry and labor of
love by founders Reverend Don and Mildred Drake. While Don Drake has since
passed his ministry continues, with Mildred continuing to operate the station
daily.

Distant listeners to the test may hear vintage clips of Rev. Don?s music,
Mildred?s lovely singing voice or even a short sermon from the past.

The station will also broadcast test tones, Morse Code identifications,
long-duration 1 kHz test tones, and voice announcements. The testing will begin
at 12:01 AM Eastern Time (05:01 UTC) on Saturday morning, February 25th. The
test will last for two hours.

The test will be challenging, with powerful 50 kW stations like KTSB and WWVA
dominating the channel in most of the United States. But the station?s last
test on November 2, 2002, was widely heard in the US and Canada. You can read
the results of that test here:

Miss Pike welcomes reception reports from faraway listeners, ?We always love to
hear from our listeners, and would be very interested to hear if anyone notices
any distortion or issues with our audio.?

Listeners who hear the test are asked to submit reception reports to the CPC,
who will handle the station's reception reports. Please follow the requirements
below:

Send an email of your report, along with a two-minute long recording of your
reception in .MP3 or .WAV format to:

d...@highnoonfilm.com <mailto:d...@highnoonfilm.com>

The email should include the following:

other information you?d like to share.

the audio you received.

All emails should be formatted exactly as above. Start with your contact
information, and be sure to include the email where you want the QSL emailed.
Your membership is also important. Members of the NRC and/or IRCA will receive
priority handling for their QSL requests.

Reception reports must be received within the next 30 days. The use of remote
SDRs to receive the test is discouraged unless it is a receiver location that
you have built and maintained specifically for DXing. If a remote SDR is used,
you must disclose the location of the receiver and the name of the owner, if
known. The remote receiver must be located at least 500 miles from WDFB.

One QSL per DXer.

The CPC would like to thank Mildred Drake, Cindy Pike and everyone at WDFB for
working with the DXing community to coordinate the station maintenance. ?I?m
very excited about the test coming up and just a little nervous...? noted Ms.
Pike. We?re excited too, Cindy!

Thanks also to Harry Dence who personally visited the station, along with
several other Kentucky daytime stations. Harry has been an incredible
ambassador for the hobby, travelling to small stations around the Bluegrass
state to discuss DXing with station owners and request tests. If you have the
time, please consider doing the same in your area. Nothing beats this
one-on-one networking.

The station will be on the air testing for two hours, using their daytime
power. Don?t miss this chance to hear a rare daytime-only station. Otherwise,
you might have to wait another twenty years for the chance.

** BRAZIL. 5940.030, Feb 23 at 0444, JBA carrier, presumed current
variation of R. Voz Mission?ria (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA [non]. 5910, UT Thu Feb 23 at 0445, Western familiar
classical piano and orchestral music, break for announcement in
Cantonese; until 0455 sign-off announcement. CGTN Radio via CUBA,
S9+40/50. Hardly expected but another candidate for Alan Roe`s Music
on Shortwave (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 4765, Feb 23 at 0434, no signal from R. Progreso. Is it ever
on any more? I don`t often check during its limited nominal span,
0130-0500.

5040, RHC evenings also absent most or all of the time including now.

6165, Feb 23 at 0638, weak S8/S9 algo talk, NOT RHC as not // 6000
English. Lots of other 6165 usage but in EiBi & Aoki nothing now, the
closest being NHK Arabic via France until 0620. What could this be?
RHC Spanish on exciter power? The Other Side:

``READ TODAY THE CUBA OF TOMORROW
February 22, 2023 BASEBALL
The best thing a baseball player can do to help the sport in Cuba is
emigrate
In Cuba, athletes cannot prosper or progress in their athletic
disciplines.
YUSIM? RODR?GUEZ L?PEZ | Madrid
Luis Robert, one of the Major League Baseball players on the Cuban
team. (MLB)

A player who wishes to bolster the results of Cuban baseball at
international tournaments should emigrate. Leaving, and as young as
possible, should be considered by the regime as the most patriotic
thing an athlete can do for what is still Cuba's national sport.

Cuba cannot meet its athletes' economic aspirations, let alone their
aspirations for freedom, or those or of any of its citizens, nor can
it provide them with the chance to improve in their respective
disciplines.

The level of baseball in Cuba has hit rock bottom. What happened at
the Gran Caracas Caribbean Series 2023 is just the latest evidence of
this. It was not enough to create a selective tournament to bring
together the best players from the National Series....``
https://diariodecuba.com/deportes/1676917648_45347.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 5800, Feb 23 at 0455, weak pulse jamming against
nothing: because WRMI briefly? admittedly put R. Rep?blica here before
0400, thus ruining another frequency forever. Current websked is
contradictory: System B mostly feeding 9955 is shown on 5800 this
0400-0500 hour only with `Freedom Synergy Radio` daily; while System H
also shows 5800 at 04-05 with Prague in English, Spanish - all of this
missing!

Now on the WRMI program info page you will find *no* mention of
F.S.R.; nor R. Rep?blica even on the System sked pages. 17 months ago
I said, ``Freedom Synergy Radio, the dispensable Falungong anti-PRC show``.

9490.07, Feb 23 at 0456, weak carrier here as if the Issoudun, FRANCE
transmitter of RMI`s Radio Rep?blica still be on, typically
off-frequency. Persistent jamming is also often audible here some
hours later (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11760, Feb 23 at 0747, S9+20 of dead air, no doubt RHC not
turned off long after-hours. Ivo Ivanov says it was in English until
0700. Something`s always wrong at RHC. Think of how many
undernourished Cubans could have had hearty meals for the cost of all
that wasted electrical fluid; not to mention all the jammers against
nothing or something (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI [and non]. 846 kHz, Feb 23 at 0503, JBA carrier already
from R. Kiribati. Not usually do I check this early but it is well
after Xmas I sunset. Gary Pence, KM5X had it on the Oahu SDR by 0423.
Only other 9/kHz split for me at 0503 is the slow beat between two
Spaniards on 855. Recheck at 0731, still 846, only (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 344 MCW kHz, Feb 23 at 0736 UT, JBA mixture of ND beacons JA
and JL, at slightly different pitches; no problem separating by USB
tuning 342 from 341 local EI, and its mixer, OIN, OberlIN KS. JA is
400 watts from JAxonvil FL, over a kilomile away, a rare distance
among US beacon DX here; while JL is 25 watts from nearerby JopLin MO
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 720, Feb 23 at 0058-0116 UT, I`m on the DX398 positioned to
null WGN as much as possible, for any sign of KDWN Las Vegas, the one
in NV, during the final week of its life: no show, just some other
weak signals, mostly musical; most likely KSAH in TX if not M?xico or
Nicaragua. Official Feb sunset for KDWN is 0115 UT when it should
switch from 25 kW ND day, to 7.5 kW direxional night protecting WGN.
The current terminator/grayline at 0100 is circa the AZ/NM border, so
skywave propagation eastward ought to be starting soon if not already.
Reverse at 1430 UT sunrise not explored yet, unless I happen to awaken
by then.

This is in preparation for the DX special, UT Wed March 1 at 0759-0809
UT when KDWN CE has agreed to run 25 kW test at night one last time,
but unknown whether will be ND. In order to help other easterners DX
that, I suggested to the CPC that WGN could be asked to turn itself
off for that brief period --- that was met with derision and insults
on the IRCA iog, tho a few brave DXers backed my out-of-the-box
idea.

I myself do not `need` to DX KDWN, as I have logged it before such as
in *2015y*, when it was suspected of not following the rules:

``720, Sept 20 at 1213 UT, ``Live in Las Vegas`` talk show from
``K-Dawn``, 257-5396 = KDWN, also asking for tweets, on subject Syria
could become a proxy war between USA and Russia. Really, live call-in
at 5 am Sunday --- I guess so in a city that never sleeps. Per
gaisma.com, today`s real dawn in LV doesn`t start until 1301 UT, and
sunrise at 1327. Enid`s sunrise is 1218 UT.

Better signal here than on 840 KXNT which I got first prompting me to
try 720. Once again, not in keeping with KDWN night pattern of a
cardioid null toward WGN, rather than ND day pattern; or do I enjoy a
propagational pipeline from LV NV? See also 1140 UNID (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)``

Aside from the `pure DX` loss of a chance to hear NV in the East, I
say good riddance, as their program sked shows far-right-liar Sean
Hannity in prime time and another Faux host, Brian Kilmeade. The other
names I do not recognize, maybe locals and I bet not one of them the
least bit `liberal`.

However, Stephen Luce comments as of Feb 23: ``Although KDWN and KXST
are going silent, the licenses have not yet been surrendered. Still a
small possibility one or both could be resurrected under new
ownership. Whether it makes any business sense to do so is up for
debate. Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF
RADIO 2179)

** U S A. 1130 kHz, Feb 23 at 0732 UT, open carrier atop KWKH, no
doubt KLEY Wellington KS by groundwave, same as pre-sunset. Also some
music, from a 3rd station? Or maybe KLEY JBM (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 7260, Feb 23 at 0800, R. Vanuatu, S8/S9 talk but
unreadable; and no VON neighboring on 7255- (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9510, Feb 23 at 0757, again that open carrier except for
some hum, S5/S6 fading and some split-second breaks (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)
