The biennial Mini Transat single-handed yacht race (sponsored by La

sailing from Les Sables d'Olonne in France, with a destination on the
first stage of the race, Santa Cruz de la Palma in the Canary Islands.

(The second stage is scheduled to begin from La Palma on 25th October,
destination Guadeloupe.)

One feature of the race is participants use paper charts and only have a
VHF radio (with around 10 mile coverage). But there is a daily shortwave
broadcast in French and English giving them weather conditions.

Two frequencies are registered on HFCC for these daily Mini Transat (MT)
weather forecasts at 1500-1600 UTC: 7340 and 17545 kHz (both 250
kilowatts from Issoudun).

17545 kHz was heard yesterday (25th Sept) at 1500 UTC by Adam Amirkhanov
in Bucharest on WRTH Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/18mRyaXsEg/

However, the first stage of Mini Transat has now been cancelled with
boats sheltering in ports on the Portuguese coast because of the
impending Category 4 Hurricane Gabriele approaching from the Azores,
expected to hit the coast of Portugal on Saturday.

the hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** FRANCE [and non]. 17545, Sept 27 at 1528, JBA carrier direct from
Issoudun, but into Azores SDR, VG S9+10/20. For the Mini Transat yacht
race, maritime weather voiced rather than faxed maps! YL in English,
heavy French accent so a real person? Surely a robot could speak clear
English. Frequent mentions of ``November`` refer to the direxion
North, as in Geo co?rdinates; likewise South = sierra, West = whiskey;
and East = echo pronounced eek-oh. I thought this race had been
suspended due to hurricane in the way? Anyway, forecasts for next few
days.?

1543 she starts saying ``finally...``; 1544 ``that`s all for today,
take care, talk to you tomorrow, ? demain`` - the only French heard;
entirely in French earlier in the 1500 hour. 1544 heavy beat music.
1545 open carrier to 1546*. Supposedly also on 7340 from ISS, but no
signal into Azores, and at UTwente, only something else, presumably
East Turkistan, PBS Xinjiang, Urumqi in Kazakh at 2300-1800!

** U S A. 5920, Sept 27 at 0623+, horrible galaxy of spurs: I`m
finding numerous extremely distorted spurblobs above and below this
WTWW frequency with TOMBS matching modulation. These are the approx.
ranges, with the middle frequency being the approx. peak, but no
specific carriers. Of course, they get progressively weaker the
further out. They are approx. multiples of ~86 kHz displacement. Note
that the peaks are closer to the upper edge than the lower edge, but
maybe because of tuning in USB. Not in the order monitored. First one
found, 5834, read S9+25:

5657-5661-5663
5741-5747-5750
5831-5834-5835
6001-6006-6008
6087-6093-6095
6175-6179-6182
6260-6265-6268
6347-6350-6352
JBA: 6436

Paul Walker, Alaska, also reported to NASWA: ``At 0500 UTC Sept 27,
WTWW 5920 has very distorted spurs on 6005 and 6092`` (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 9960, Sept 27 at 0648, RV not off the air, S5 of music.
Ron Howard reported earlier: ``Radio Vanuatu not heard 0545+ UT, Sept
27 -- Hi Glenn - Was just checking for Radio Vanuatu, via New Zealand
remotes and found no signal at all on
9960, 7260, 5040, 3945 or 2485 kHz. Probably another power outage that
tripped off their transmitter? As usual, I have alerted Pryce
Aptenbel, at the station. Ron (Monterey, Calif.)``

And from Gedas in Indiana: ``I just checked at 06:45 UTC and they have
a very strong signal on 9960 directly into Indiana. Your note to them
seems to have worked. However I am also hearing a very strong
broadband QRM signal coming and going that really messes up reception.
