Subject: [WOR] Malaysia RTM antenna directions?
March 4 - From 0201 till cut off at 0208* UT, interesting to find solid, fair
reception on 15295 (RTM Nasional FM),
while I was unable to hear a signal on 11885 (RTM Sabah V FM), both via Kiwi
SDR remote in Nepal. Both
frequencies would seem to be broadcasting via antennas which are aimed in
different directions? Believe the
power output is the same for both frequencies?
Both frequencies were very strong via Bogor, Indonesia remote, till both went
off at 0208* UT (did not return by
the time I tuned-away at 0215). Both 9835 & 11665 remain silent from Malaysia.

(BBCM via AGDX, Feb 26, 1998 year)
and September 2002:
MALAYSIA The listed domestic SW freqs of RTM West MLA are all active. An
engineer at the Kajang Txing Station, just South-East of Kuala Lumpur,
told me that the poorly performing tx on 5965 is a very old 5 kW standby
unit. It will be replaced by a 100 kW tx - now used on 15295kHz - after the
installation of a new 250 kW Thomcast tx for the 19 mb outlet, mainly
intended for the bcs in Arabic. Also a new TCI antenna system (type HRS-
441) is being installed. This project should be completed in Oct.
RTM Sarawak's listed SW freqs are all active. Acc to the Director of
Bcing, the Sibu tx, which used to operate on 5005, cannot be repaired as
the necessary parts are no longer available. The MW network, the still
expanding FM-network and the recently upgraded SW facilities at Kuching
appear to provide adequate coverage. With Miri having left SW already a
couple of years ago, the remaining Sibu tx on 6050 is likely to continue
till it breaks down, so get it while you can!
Spare parts for the RTM Sabah tx, which used to operate on 4970, are no
longer available either. As MW & FM coverage are considered adequate, it
may never be reactivated. However, the tx on 5980 will continue as long as
it lasts. The current SW schedule of the progrmes in En and minority langs
is as follows: En 0330-0730 (news at 0500), Kadazan 0730-1000, Bajau 1000-
1200, Dusun 1200-1315 and Murut 1315-1330 UT.
(Marten van Delft-HOL on MLA tour, dswci DXW Aug 28, 2002)
MALAYSIA RTM continues to develop its MF and VHF networks, in Eastern
and Western Malaysia. The facilities used for domestic HF bcing will not
be replaced or repaired once their useful life has been reached, and some
txs have already been closed down, in Sarawak and Sabah. The following
freqs were observed as being active, and may also be in use at other
times:
4845 24-hrs (Kajang). Tamil, noted with phone-in progrming 0430-0500
(100 kW)
4895 *2200-0100*, *0800-1000*, *1030-1500* (off air 1000-1030)

5980 *2200-1500* (Kota Kinabalu) (10 kW)
6025 *0500-1700* (Kajang) (100 kW). Malay (Radio-8 and indigenous langs)
6050 *2200-1500* (Sibu) (10 kW)

7270 0830-1200* *1245-1500* (Kuching) (10 kW)
7295 24-hrs, (Kajang) (100 kW). English, relays 90.3 VHF "Radio-4" from
Kuala Lumpur.
Notes:
1. Actual operational times for Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Sibu vary,
within the time span indicated. Weekday schedules differ from weekends and
holidays
2. At 1300-1310, 5030 4895 5980 6050 7270 all carry national nx in Malay
from Kuala Lumpur; at 1310 local progrming resumes
3. Upgrading work is in progress at the Kajang site, with higher power
being introduced for some sces. (Bob Padula-AUS, edxp Sept 18, 2002)
MALAYSIA BCDX lately reported on the SW activities from Malaysia.
Shortwave activity and in particular their foreign sce apparently have not
the very highest priority in this country. Personally I'm wondering
whether their En sce "Voice of Malaysia" (at European morning hours /
afternoon local time) on 15295 kHz has been regular during the last decade
or so.
Although I heard it in Germany every now and then I was unable to hear it
in South Australia in Jan 1994. This surprised me a bit as to my
understanding this sce is intended for Australia as a target area. Their
Arabic sce at 1530 h UTC can usually been heard with much better signals
in Europe, but I don't know whether this has been regular.

During recent months their sce in Bahasa (either Bahasa MLA or Bahasa INS)
on 9750 kHz at around 1600 UT seems to be the most reliable reception in
Europe. On 21 Sept this year, however, I heard NHK World in En instead at
1535 on 9750 kHz and nothing from Malaysia. This might have been due to
propagation.
[Kajang-MLA 100 kW 150 degrs, Yamata-JPN 300 kW 290 degrs]
Getting into contact with the stn other than by "snail mail" seems to be
not that easy. In Jan 2000 I tried to phone the stn from KL airport on a
weekday afternoon. The phone number from the WRTH resulted in a taped
message "Thank you for calling Angkasapuri ". Does anyone have a valid
email address of the stn or contact person for schedules?
The tx site at Kajang must be located somewhere between the ultramodern
Sepang airport (and Formula One circuit) and downtown Kuala Lumpur.
