** FRANCE. 17545, July 25 at 1459 S9+10/20 carrier into UTwente, 1500
familiar dramatic music, as once again there is weather info for a

Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702

woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7490, Fri July 24 at 2358, WBCQ S9+20/30 direct with FKB,
5130 JBA carrier and none others, UT Sat July 25 at 0000, ``WTO`` and
``AAAWWW` opens with overtheme exclamations, ``That was easy`` and
``We`re with all barrels blazing``, i.e. repeat of last week which was
repeat of previous week: never mind (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. Another huge sporadic E FM DX opening, July 24/25
UT, I have not quite finished researching and compiling, at 2135-2317,
0010-0114 from at least PA, OH, NY, NJ, WV, DC, IN, QC, ON, GA, FL.
And another one July 25 at 1523-1530 from AL+ (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Re: "1160 kHz, July 24 at 0611 UT, surprised to hear
something in Spanish instead of KSL, then KSL resurges under. Vs IBOC
noise peaking 1157 from KOTV Tulsa, but also some with USB tuning.
IBOC on 1163 would come from 1150, but nothing known there with it,
nor any match heard on 1137. As for the SS, not many choices, unless
something have changed. Per IRCA Mexican Log, XEQIN in BCN, day power
10 kW which I would not expect here; CP for a station in Guanajuato,
XECSEG; in USA, per NRC AM Log, WEWC near Jaxonvil FL, ditto like
XEQIN; and most likely, KCTO Cleveland MO, R. Maria, U4 5000/2300,
SS/REL. Did not hear enough to judge whether religious (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)" -- Tim Hall replies:

``I would rule out XEQIN. They run the anthem around 0100 UT and are
usually off the air by 0200. The latest I have ever heard them was
0500 UT, and that was quite a few years ago. WEWC has made it to my
Nevada-Utah border DXpeditions once or twice. I still have not heard
KCTO there. More common than any of these at my DXpeditions is HJOC
Bogot?, last known to be operating as Su Presencia Radio which would
be religious. This station appears to have been leased to several
different organizations, mostly religious, over the last decade. HTH
73 Tim``

Based on years of non-DX from beyond Mexico, except PJB of course, I
have not even been considering such a possibility, but maybe (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** FRANCE. More about the marine weather broadcasts at 1500 on 17545
and 7340: Original tip in BDXC-UK: ``Tuned into man with French
weather forecasts at 1511 UTC on 7340 kHz today 24 July. At 1520 lady
in English reading weather reports took over. Voices were familiar as
heard on Mini Transat broadcasts in previous years. After checking
HFCC, could also hear weaker parallel on 17545 (TDF via Issoudun
1500-1600). There's an event, Les Sables to the Azores and back, "Mini
Atlantique" so presume the broadcasts are for participants in that:
https://lessables-lesacores650.fr/
Broadcast ended around 1555. 73 Alan Pennington, TEF 6686 +
telescopic, Cornwall``

At start of today's transmission at 1500 UTC, after opening well-known
music, the man in French did mention "Mini Atlantique" so the
broadcasts are for that event. Excellent reception on 17545 kHz on the
Azores Kiwi SDR which is good as that is where the boats are
heading;-) 73 Alan Pennington, Caversham, UK``

{I tried Azores but it seemed to be out of order - Glenn}

"To all the Mini Atlantique competitors en route to Horta for the
first leg of the race between Les Sables-d'Olonne and the town of
Horta on the island of Faial." regards, Harald DL1AX Kuhl``

Walt Salmaniw replied: ``Thanks to Alan Pennington for pointing this
race. Into Masset at 15:09 tune-in with French weather information by
OM at fair/good level on 17540 {sic} (I recall in other years, the
Mini Transat had DRM broadcasts; not this time). // 7340 Carrier
visible only. Continued in French by OM until 15:16:10. 2 seconds
latter, YL (clearly live; not robotic at all) began in English.
Continued until 15:45:20 when she mentions, "I leave you with music;
2008". Music continued until a brief announcement by same YL at
15:56:57: "Have a nice day. See you tomorrow". More music until
15:58:32. Dead air until carrier off at 15:59:11. 73, Walt --
Enjoying the world of radio from my remote QTH on Haida Gwaii off the
NW coast of BC, Canada``

Alex Miatlikov, Denmark, replied: ``Oddly enough, there were LOTS of
Russian songs from that time (played for few seconds actually). To be
fair, there was a Ukrainian song by Bumboks too.`` (via Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. Another very big sporadic E FM DX opening July 24
into UT July 25, probably underway for some time when I start
monitoring the caradio as usual; in most cases there is heavy CCI, two
or three DX stations fighting to capture the frequency, fading back
and forth, making it hard to copy a complete name, website, phone
number, even callsign! Not to mention the regular OK/KS stations. Also
hard to be sure which station goes with which info during a minute`s
time; to keep us aware of this, look for all the times I mention CCI.
Note, I often indicate $ for $tereo icon displayed, not necessarily
heard as such. If not indicated does not mean not $, just that I did
not note it. Of course, only significant when definitely in mono. I
could probably make educated guesses on some of the unIDs, based on
PTA, and other factors, but enough is enough? Additional standard
boilerplate introduxion. All times UT:

July 24:
87.7 at 2135, rock music in $tereo, English. 2136, ``87.7 The Spy, a
place where the 90`s never ended``. 2158 still, $ rock. 2209, rock,
note slight bleed tuned to 87.9 so likely really on 87.75, a FrankenFM
ch A6 TV audio frequency. Keep checking periodically while logging
lots up and down the dial, and am assuming the same station tho there
are a few others in eastern USA. 2258 still music, and still 2313.
0010 resuming, still rock in $tereo. 0049 ``the first spot on the
dial``. So what is it? WTFDA FMDB:

UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIALS

Hi Glenn, Greetings from Minnesota! I listened to this episode [WOR
2357] today via the podcast while driving, and I wanted to let you
know how much I appreciated the thoughtful and gracious way you
handled the Voice of America articles from last week's group
discussion. You did an excellent job of presenting the facts,
addressing the different perspectives fairly, and approaching the
topic with integrity. I've always been honored to be a part of this
group, and this broadcast only reinforced that feeling. Thank you for
the care and professionalism you bring to your program. 73s --Rodney
