I just attended an on-line demo session with Jim Garvie and Judy Thierry of
the IHS presented by Col. Jill Phillips of from Walter Reed and someone who's
name I don't know. I was interested to see what the DOD had for pediatrics
and OBGYN as a model for our modules, so this is not quite what I expected.
However, it has things that are helpful to think about and maybe use in all
clinical settings. It reflects a lot of thought and good input from
clinicians in it's design for rapid use and collection of data and I think we
can learn from it.

This system is web based and can import data from CHCS I but cannot put it
back in. CHCS I can apparently be run next to it on the same PC. It can
generate a paper History and Physical for the admission of the patient to the
hospital. It is Oracle based and currently serves Walter Reed and outlying
clinics. It is also used elsewhere. It is strongly oriented to shaping care
to meeting guidelines and best practices for disease management.

It also allows for multiple survey tools to be completed by the patient and
that data entered into the system. The patient is given something called a
Point-Of-View which has much of the attraction of the touch screen laptop for
gathering data but none of the attraction for theft. They surveys be served
by a Kiosk or by docking the protable units as I understand it. There is a
picture of the unit that could be handed to patients in a waiting room here
on page 3.

There is a full demo of the system here, much like the demo the VA has for
CPRS at www.va.gov/vista.

and a link to the demo and other information here.

They would be interested in partnering with someone who could get a grant to
utilize this system. From what I heard from them, this is likely FOIAble,
but they feel strongly that being handed the software is going to be of no
use to anybody.

If anyone wants to chat about it, you know how to find me.
