Medicine (in some ways) is a more complicated domain. 

Launching a spacecraft is simply a matter of kinematics, dynamics, and some
fairly determistic equations that never change.

so they can almost understand each other on their monthly concalls. BTW 
at HIMSS in 1997, DEC had set up a demonstration of 11 different vendor 
systems sharing data... 7 years later and it seems easier to launch your 
own personal spacecraft than to integrate the patchwork of systems that 
are out there....
