This reminds me for some reason of something that a senior IBM exec who was copresenter at a recent conference said when asked what were the common objections to adopting VistA.... one being that it is based on "legacy" technology ie. M.... she replied, that's "interesting" we (IBM) have found that in the last few years one of our oldest technologies, VM has given us a significant strategic advantage in the market place. VM, for those who may not be familiar is Virtual Machine and allows you to run multiple operating systems in separate partitions on a mainframe, up to a thousand or more if I am not mistaken. The UCLA Medical Center, for example runs numerous Linux partitions on its IBM mainframe along with the primary OS all on top of VM. As an aside I cut my teeth on VM/CMS at the University of Waterloo....that and DEC VMS (and now Linux) have been my all time favourites....
