I agree with Fil.

I have used Epi-Info.... or at least run it. It was so long ago that I don't
remember much about it... except that Nothing I've used gives me the control
over my data that FileMan provides. I ran my medical practice with many new
files and fields grafted onto the IHS PRCR... (or whatever we call it; excuse
the oldtime's). I made many mistakes, but the data came in and out, and we
could fix the mistakes. A database for a single research project is not a fork
from the VistA hospital information system. 

If diamond is not available, I would install openvista semiviva 0.4 and ignore
 most of that, keep to a name/numberspace, and draw upon the rest when it
suits the task.
