Greg, Ruben:
You are both correct on the need for evolution toward more effective
system behavior and the key to that is effective mangement of the Life
Cycle process, in this case in some coordination with the VA, IHS and DoD.
Likewise, WV will need to organize to let the various health professional
disciplines know what is going on in the VistA Community (WV Education
Committee) and how WV will try to coordinate with key specialty
disciplines (such as on the Pediatrics version of VistA Office) via its
various Project teams. That structure, which is still being assembled,
will be the key to how we can effectively pursue this issue. try to figure
out what the various accredited Strandards developer Organizations are
doing, how their efforts are being coordinated via ANSI HISB, and how
these efforts enable entry points with respect to the various needs for
common conventions (standards) in support of the capabiliie of your
interest. One such organization would be the re-activated MDC which can be
an informational focus for the effective use in healthcare (or
banking/finance) for example. But get into an effective activity.

I don't disagree, but people won't use a tehnology because the only
alternative is paper. We still need to ask how we can make the software
usable (and useful) for health care professionals, and then produce
software that meets their needs. If a product is painful to use, people
will avoid using it, no matter how logical the arguments you or I can
muster as to why they "should" use it might seem.

Generally the systems that have been built are not good. But,
nothing
is worse than paper and the medication error rates and the billions

dollars in costs due to injury make that crystal clear.
