Do you want to? If you already have a reasonable amount of programming
experience (and you do), then picking up MUMPS should be a snap.
Learning Fileman is the hard part, not because it's complicated but
because it requires a bit of a different mind set. It's a lot like
learning an object oriented language like Java where it often takes a
bit of time before you "get it". You're the MD. I'm just a software
developer. If you want to work with (or just understand) VistA
internals, I'd say to go for it. On the other hand, you shouldn't feel
that you need to learn MUMPS (or Delphi or Java) to work with VistA. If
you do, that means that there is a problem with VistA.

I learned C, Pascal and some Lisp in college, but had never even heard
of MUMPS before taking this job. I learned the language in one of the
(excellent) courses offered by Greg Kreis' company. The book they gave
all of us is the (perhaps a bit dated, but still good) "The Complete
MUMPS" by John Lewkowicz. A co-worker of mine lent me his copy of
Walters' textbook, and I was very impressed. That would be my first
recommendation.
