It boils down to which laptop model and which operating system. For

To check out hardware compatibility with Linux, download the Knoppix
live CD from http://knopper.net or an OpenVistA VivA FOIA Gold live DVD

Tuxmobil.org is the best first step.

Knoppix is great for a basic check. It may be possible to
make all of the laptop work under linux using patches etc
available on the net, but knoppix itself often cannot make
everything work.

(I am not familiar with the hardware-coping ability of
OpenVistA VivA FOIA Gold live DVD, though I suspect it will
be pretty much the same as Knoppix.)

A google search on the laptop model and linux often turns up
information on how well the hardware can be made to work.

Generally, older, cheaper, and more popular models tend to be more
compatible. One caveat: Seriously geek-desirable models tend to
get linux drivers faster (eg sony picturebook series, sony
u1/u3/u101 ultraportables).

One could hire a local linux geek for advice, figuring it all
out, and customising the kernel for the laptop. I suspect
that since Peter Franklin (original poster) hasn't been too
specific about the problem (suggesting low geekiness), that
this may be his wisest option.
