Just to give Kevin Toppenberg a complete picture: IMAP has some added features over POP, but you *can* also treat imap mail just like pop mail, fetching and dumping it to your local box.

You could run IMAP over a vpn, and avoid having to setup IMAP/TLS and
SSL on the server.

For non-vpn, you could do a fetch-and-dump over ssl (eg: with fetchmail -ssl, using proto IMAP (instead of proto POP). That is pretty much a no-brainer on the client end, though configuring the server for IMAP/SSL is usually a bit harder, or it was last time I had a look).
