Thanks all for your reply.
To run VistA from linux prompt, I used to type "gtm". Yesterday when I used the command "/usr/local/OpenVistA/vista --run /home/vista/OpenVistA" to get to the GT.M prompt, I could add a new record to the NEW PERSON file as usual. The vista's .bash_profile file created the problem, by making VistA access the database in /usr/local/OpenVistA/g directory. Following is vista's .bash_profile file

# User specific environment and startup programs

export gtm_dist=/usr/local/gtm
export gtm_log=/home/vista/OpenVistA/log
export gtmgbldir=/usr/local/OpenVistA/g/mumps.gld
export vista_home=/usr/local/OpenVistA
export gtm_vista=/home/vista/OpenVistA
export vista_source=/usr/local/OpenVistA
export gtmroutines="$gtm_vista/o($gtm_vista/r) $vista_source/o($vista_source/r) $gtm_dist"
export PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:$gtm_dist

##alias GTM="$gtm_dist/mumps -direct"
##alias gtm="$gtm_dist/mumps -direct"
alias GTM="/usr/local/OpenVistA/vista --run $vista_home"
alias gtm="/usr/local/OpenVistA/vista --run $vista_home"
alias mupip="$gtm_dist/mupip"
alias gde="$gtm_dist/mumps -r ^GDE"
alias lke="$gtm_dist/lke"
alias dse="$gtm_dist/dse"

unset USERNAME
Thanks

During the hang press CTRL-C, this will break the session, you can then see what exactly was going on by viewing the symbol table as well as what linetag^routine was being executed.  You can better troubleshoot from there.

Hangs like you describe could be caused by an array of things, journal file not being writeable, storage medium failure, write access prohibited, etc.

If the user does not have rights to add to a file, the system should show
two question marks (??) for erroneous response... But here the system just
hangs on pressing enter after entering the name of the patient. (After
giving the user "@" access)
I am facing this on the OpenVistA SemiVivA 0.4.
