I certainly don’t know the details of how the NDC/UPN file is used, but you can search the PSN* routines and see the places where the reference information is used.

Subject: [Hardhats-members] How is file NDC/UPN file used

I am still investigating the pharmacy files, with the help of the NATIONAL DRUG FILE TECH MANUAL from the VDL
It describes that all drug codes are stored in the NDC/UPN file (50.67).
(FYI NDC=National Drug Code, I assume that UPN is something like 'universal product number')

What I don't understand is that VPE states that there are no pointer into this file.  Perhaps the pointers haven't been properly "registered" with Fileman?

How can this data be used with no pointers into it.
Having said this, I just realized that it does have pointers OUT to the VA PRODUCT file.
So perhaps the file is used for looking up a drug by its NDC, but not for finding out what a given drug's NDC number is.

Does that sound right?

Kevin
