Specific programs or specific ports/ips/protocols?
XP w/ SP2 firewall should block any app not whitelisted using a port that's not whitelisted. A firewall appliance would not know what app was making the call since that info is not part of a packet but can block specific ports/ips/protocols.
On the hardware firewall front... After using my Linksys wrt54gs w/ Sveasoft Satori for a few months now, I enthusiastically recommend it as a firewall/router. It's running IPtables, a compact no-hassle appliance, and highly configurable if you want it to be. So why waste a full blown PC running linux?

Take an older machine (think ~400MHz or better) and install ClarkConnect Home 3.0 on it.

Doesn't get more fully-featured than that. I've used it for several years now.

Looking for recommendations for a DSL Router with full featured firewall. I want the ability to stop or manage specific programs contacting or communicating to the Internet.
Or - should I be looking at a hardware based firewall and stick with my current DSL router?
First hand observations and thoughts would be most helpful.
