The problem isn't so much doing the scan...there are a handful of tools out there that can do it, and a handful of drives that support it (and a handful of those that can scan with any sort of consistency). The problem is being able to interpret the results properly, based on the speeds, drive used, the media, and the scan parameters. If a single element is off or misrepresented, the results are completely worthless. At any rate, I don't have the time at the moment (about to leave) to explain it in detail. :)
