I don't think you'll see real time satelite photos for  quite a long time. The 
freshness of the data is really dependant on where Google goes for their image 
data, and how recently a survey was done.

Take a look at New Jersey - you'll see very good high-res images. 

The 3D contouring features are really nice. Take the Grand Canyon tour.
